Paul Stirling contributed 74 before getting retired hurt while Lorcan Tucker continued the good work with a 102-ball 78 not out. The middle-order batter had an unbeaten stand of 77 runs with Curtis Campher (27*) by the time of stumps.
Earlier in the morning, Ireland were off to a poor start as they lost their first three wickets with just 89 runs on the board. Fear of another heavy defeat of the first Test loomed at large as James McCollum (10), Peter Moor (5) and Harry Tector (18) were out cheaply.
Prabath Jayasuriya (2/95) took a couple of wickets after Asitha Fernando (1/46) took the first wicket of the day in Moor. Balbirnie, however, justified the decision to bat first after winning the toss as he had a crucial 115-run partnership with Stirling before the latter was retired hurt.
Balbirnie fell short of a well-deserved maiden century by just five runs as Ramesh Mendis had him taken at the first slip after the batter failed to play a sweep shot.
