The duo added 64 runs for the first wicket before Maduskha was dismissed by Curtis Campher. Ireland were made to work hard for the next wicket as Karunaratne batted for the next 60 overs with Kusal Mendis.
They together added 281 runs for the second wicket before Mendis (140) was caught lbw by George Dockrell. This was his 8th Test century after the last came against Bangladesh more than three years ago.
It was the start of the middle-order collapse as the next two wickets fell in space of 28 runs with Karunaratne being the last man to be dismissed on the day just 21 runs away from his double century. This was his 15th century in Test cricket. Dinesh Chandimal and Prabath Jayasuriya will resume Sri Lankan innings at 18 and 12 runs respectively.
For Ireland, Mark Adair, Campher, Benjamin White, and Dockrell took a wicket each while Andy McBrine gave away 107 runs in 27 overs.
