Sharma, starting from the non-striker end, ran for a quick single at a split after Ishan Kishan pushed the ball towards the point region with a fielder present. Kishan showed his reluctance for the run and said no but the MI skipper already committed himself for the single.
Kishan then decided to sacrifice his wicket as he made a late and failed attempt for a run as Lalit Yadav took the bails off after a throw from Rovman Powell. As per Cricbuzz, this was the 37th time that Rohit Sharma was involved in a run out in IPL and is the joint most with Dinesh Karthik, who plays for Royal Challengers Bangalore.
This is also the 26th time that Rohit Sharma was involved in a runout while his partner was the one to be dismissed. He shared the unwanted record with MS Dhoni.
The incident happened in the eighth over of the second innings when Rohit and Ishan were building a match-winning partnership of 71 runs while chasing 174. Ishan, on the delivery prior to his dismissal, asked for a quick signal but the request was denied by the skipper. However, the tragedy stuck right after.
Rohit Sharma, however, used his years of experience to not let the setback get under their skin as he had another key partnership with in-form Tilak Varma for the second wicket. The skipper also hit his first half-century of the IPL 2023 soon after, ending his drought of half-centuries in 24 innings.
This is also the longest an opener went without scoring 50-plus in tournament history with Mayank Agarwal (21) and Murali Vijay (20) behind him.
